Welcome and Some Net Neutrality

Welcome to Digital Agenda (.ca) this site is part of CIPPIC's plan to have a more active online presence. The site is still under a bit of construction and will be fleshed out in the coming weeks. If you find anything that is not working quite right, you would like to get involved, or if you have any ideas about the site.

I am a third year law student at the University of Ottawa and I suppose I am also the site administrator. Much of my time this summer was spent on the CRTC Net Neutrality hearing, so I wanted to have a post updating folks on what happens now.

The whole proceeding is essentially over, the final phase of written submissions closed yesterday. There are still some cost things to sort out but those are pretty mundane and will not impact the core findings. It can take months for a decision to be delivered and I think we'll see one in late 2008 or early 2009. Some of the reply comments have already been posted and can be seen here.

But that's not the end of the line for net neutrality. There are rumblings in parliament about a bill and there is always the possibility of an order in council. Essentially an order in council is an order from cabinet for a certain issue to be decided a certain way. There will be more opportunities to get involved and we'll do our best to keep people informed and make it accessible.

Finally thanks to everybody who paid attention to hearings, made submissions, or sent us a kind tweet. In the long run public interest and involvement is going to make a huge difference.

(For a background of what happened at the hearing, Michael Geist has a fantastic summary up here)
